Man appeared in court on terrorism charges after sending threatening letter to Governor Whitmer

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – A man currently incarcerated at the Michigan Department of Corrections has been arraigned on charges of false reporting or terroristic threats.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that 36-year-old Jihaad Ahmad was arraigned Monday in Lansing 54-A District Court on a charge of False Report or Terrorist Threat. Ahmad is accused of allegedly threatening Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

According to the State of Michigan, in response to being denied parole, Ahmad sent a letter to Governor Whitmer’s office in May 2024, threatening the governor with his life and bombing his home when he was released from prison.

The threatening letter was turned over to the Michigan State Police for investigation.

“Violence and violent rhetoric directed at elected officials pose serious threats not only to them, but to our democracy as a whole,” Nessel said. “My department is committed to prosecuting this crime to the fullest extent of the law.”

The charges are punishable by up to 20 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $20,000. Ahmad will next appear before Judge Cynthia Ward in 54-A District Court on Thursday, November 14.
