“You know, for me, Stephen Schwartz and Winnie (Holzman) and Marc Platt were telling me from the very beginning that their guiding light when they were making the show was: ‘It’s about girls, stupid,'” she explained in an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com.

“So as distracting as it was to worry about sets and lights and stuff… those were all important, but that’s not really why the show works.

“The relationship between these two women is a situation of nuance and sort of scratching the surface,” he continued. “I think that’s the most interesting thing. So that was my guiding light.”

Of course the main roles of Elphaba and Galinda expertly played It helped that Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande starred in the film, with the latter in particular being a huge fan of the stage show, even if it led to a few minor disagreements about the proper way to approach things.

“Ari is a big fan of Wicked, so there are moments in the Bible where I say, ‘You can’t touch this, you can’t touch that.’ And he had some plans, too,” Chu explained. “So at one point we cut the ‘The wizard will see you now’ line, because it didn’t really fit into the nature of their trip to the Emerald City. to our geographical location.
