Man charged in fatal stabbing at Brockton park in July

A man was indicted Friday by a Plymouth County grand jury for allegedly fatally stabbing a 39-year-old man in a Brockton park in July, authorities said.

Johnny Richmond, 37, of Brockton, is charged with one count each of murder and possession of a dangerous weapon and two counts of threatening to kill, Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said in a statement.

The statement said Richmond pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in Brockton District Court in July and was being held without bail.

The indictment moves the case to the Supreme Court system.

He will be arraigned in Brockton Superior Court at a later date, according to the release.

The statement said that at 6:13 p.m. on July 20, police responded to Finnegan park, located at the intersection of Crescent and Montello Streets, after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a stabbing.

Police found Edmar Goncalves, 39, of Fall River, with stab wounds and he was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Richmond was arrested near the park after police interviewed witnesses at the scene, authorities said.

The statement stated that he was taken to South Shore Hospital due to an injury to his hand.

State Police Troopers were contacted and a preliminary investigation determined that Richmond had threatened several people with a knife in the park that evening. The statement stated that Goncalves approached Richmond to intervene before he was stabbed.
