Conor McGregor found responsible for attack on woman in Dublin in 2018

A civil court jury in Ireland on Friday found UFC fighter Conor McGregor liable in his sexual assault case and awarded nearly 250,000 euros ($257,000) in damages to the woman who accused him of rape. According to Associated Press.

According to the AP report, the 12-person jury at the High Court in Dublin gave the verdict after six hours of deliberation. The woman accused McGregor of raping her at a Dublin hotel on Dec. 9, 2018, and said the attack, which occurred after a night of partying, left her injured and caused her to develop post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the AP.

McGregor denied the allegations and stated that he never forced the woman to do anything against her will. McGregor said the two had consensual sex, according to the AP.

McGregor did not comment as he left the courtroom, but stated that he would appeal the decision in X.

Lawyers for both McGregor and the woman did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Athletic.

The woman gave a brief statement before the court on Friday. Athletic does not generally name victims or potential victims of sexual assault.

“To all victims of sexual assault, I hope my story tells you that no matter how scared you are, speak up, make your voice heard, and continue to fight for justice.” he said. According to BBC. “I know this has had a huge impact not only on my life, but also on my daughter’s, family and friends’ lives, and it’s something I’ll never forget for the rest of my life. “But now that justice has been served, I can move on and look to the future with hope with my family, friends and daughter.”

According to the AP, the woman testified in court that McGregor choked her and threatened to kill her during the incident. His lawyer said McGregor was angry about losing a fight in Las Vegas in October 2018.

McGregor said in his statement that the woman’s story was not true.

McGregor is not facing criminal charges in the case. Police launched an investigation, but prosecutors declined to file charges, AP reported.

McGregor lost his match in 2018 to Khabib Nurmagomedov, who choked McGregor. The caustic atmosphere surrounding the fight sparked a melee outside the octagon immediately after the fight ended, eventually leading to the suspensions of Nurmagomedov and McGregor. Since then, McGregor, 36, has fought three times in the UFC. His scheduled fight against Michael Chandler in June was canceled due to an injury, with McGregor saying at the time: “needed more time to heal than was given to me.”

McGregor, a former two-division champion, hasn’t fought since breaking his leg in the first round of a 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier. He hasn’t won any matches since January 2020.

The UFC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
