Memphis man accused of cashing multiple fake checks

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – Police arrested a Memphis man after they say he cashed multiple counterfeit checks, each valued at over $3,000.

Craighead County Circuit Judge Tim Fowler found probable cause to charge Quellis Irby, 47, with second-degree forgery, a class C felony, and theft of more than $5,000 but less than $25,000.

Jonesboro police were dispatched to a bank on a forgery complaint on Friday, Sept. 20, according to the affidavit. Bank management told police that Irby entered the bank and attempted to cash a check for $3,461.16.

Bank management noticed some oddities in the check and began verifying the information. Management obtained Irby’s driver’s license and social security card and then contacted the victim regarding the incident.

The victim said he did not recognize Irby or the check he was trying to cash.

Irby left the bank, leaving behind his ID and social security card.

Bank management notified police that Irby managed to cash two more checks for the same amount as the previous check from two other banks in Jonesboro.

Police obtained video footage of Irby leaving three banks. Police also took his driver’s license and social security card.

Irby’s next hearing will be held on Friday, January 24.
