Family mourns death of Angel Lata Landi, one of three victims of Manhattan stabbing

A grieving family gathered for a memorial service Friday to remember 36-year-old construction worker Angel Lata Landi. 3 people were stabbed to death In Manhattan earlier this week.

“I have no words,” the victim’s mother, Mercedes Landi, said in Spanish. Landi, who is battling cancer, came from Ecuador to mourn the death of his son.

Police say 51-year-old Ramon Rivera, a homeless man who reportedly suffered from mental illness, went on a stabbing rampage Monday morning, killing three people.

Angel was reportedly lying on a ladder on scaffolding at the job site when Rivera allegedly attacked him, stabbing him twice.

Rivera, who had a history of mental health issues, had a criminal record spanning three states and had been convicted in a previous case just a few months earlier. He was also arrested in a grand theft case last month.

Walter Sinchi, executive director of the International Alliance for Ecuador, criticized city officials for having Rivera still on the street rather than behind bars.

“How could a crazy man be on the street if he’s a criminal? That means New York City is unsafe right now,” Rivera said.

“This man had a criminal record, I don’t know why that person is walking the streets. I want him to stay in prison forever,” Landi’s sister Bertha said.

On Friday morning, the family appeared in court for the suspect’s indictment, but the suspect underwent a psychiatric evaluation and waived his right to appear in court.
