Considering the great things he’s done for WWE in this new era, it’s extremely unfortunate to see Triple H fall into serious Vince McMahon-style traps that could have easily been avoided ahead of Survivor Series: WarGames.

And that really hurts The Bloodline storyline and names like Seth Rollins.

Call it the elephant in the room or another cliché, but most people would probably agree that this Ancestry tale moves too quickly.

Roman Reigns is suddenly a good guy. His band has a brand new name and of course products to sell. Jey Uso predictably – and quickly – was stripped of the hot potato individual title and bounced back.

Oh, and so is Sami Zayn. After so many years of a complicated relationship with Bloodline, he’s twerking one week and rocking his t-shirt the next.

Now? Bronson Reed suddenly joins Solo Sikoa’s Bloodline as the fifth man for…reasons? Which means Reigns’ team needs to find another guy for some reason.

It didn’t matter if it was Rollins, or something shocking like CM Punk (to piss off Seth), or even the returning Brock Lesnar; It felt like a slap in the face when the event could easily have remained family based. It’s a four by four thing.

When fans were frustrated with the methodical and slow pacing of Bloodline stories last year and before, this wasn’t the solution they had in mind. If nothing else, this slow spread made even predictable outcomes at the time super exciting.

And it’s all in service of Survivor Series, and that’s Must have themed match with the best guys thing. Remember when everyone was attacking Hell in a Cell for quickly teaming up two Superstars in a match that didn’t deserve the payoff? Or when the Vince era did the same thing on TLC?

Remember when superstars in red and blue t-shirts competed for the sake of competition at Survivor Series? brands That they were recruited despite the company not following its own branding rules?

This Bloodline WarGames thing… it’s actually not that good. It’s rushed and stupid and just missing the red and blue shirts. The scary thing is, given how far we’ve come, there’s still time to add these to the mix.

It’s not like there’s an easy fix. WWE wants to keep Survior Series on the calendar, okay. From a punter’s perspective, settling for a smaller story in the PLE’s top slot is probably not an attractive idea.

But on the other hand, it’s not like Survivor Series will suddenly attract old and even new fans at the end of November, close to the holidays. Fans who will be watching PLE anyway won’t complain if “WarGames” matches open the show and a Bloodline match that actually makes sense closes it.

Meanwhile, Superstars like Rollins actually suffer setbacks simply because they’re in the same orbit as Bloodline. This is the same complaint we had when Cody Rhodes kept throwing himself into what were supposed to be family-based storylines that he had nothing to do with.

Rollins is clearly more loyal to Reigns than Rhodes. But he also spent the last WrestleMania season as the third wheel so the other guys could tell good stories and win championships. Now he does it again in or near a mixed 10 Superstar match. It’s clear that Rollins won’t have a ‘Mania match with Reigns, Rhodes, or Rock next year, so how will that help him?

The unfortunate thing is that if The Rock returns to re-enter the Bloodline story at the end of WarGames, these booking and pacing cuts will be lost in the noise.

But let’s not pretend that Rock’s latest appearance was good or meaningful either. Remember this? When he came out, he looked menacingly down the entrance ramp into the ring, got goosebumps, and left?

Part of what makes the Triple H era so great is flexibility. It’s the willingness to try new camera angles, interview styles, and invest in long-term storytelling. Changing the pattern of the annual PLE to fit an important story (rather than the other way around) should also be a staple of the period.

Instead, it looks like WWE is stepping up their captivating story beats with Bloodline, Zayn, Rollins, and more to fit Survivor Series. To make matters worse, it’s made in such a way that it’s difficult to build new things on top of it, especially during the slow winter months before ‘Mania season.
