Want to Stop Wasting Time? Ex Country Star Says Keep Your Phone Away

By Movieguide® Contributor

Former country star Granger Smith believes we’re wasting our time and lives on smartphones.

In a YouTube video, the now-priest shared thoughts on the subject.

“I generally encourage time blocking,” he said in response to a fan wondering about time management. “I like to think about it if you feel like parts of your day are wasted. Seven day period, write everything down. Know exactly what you are doing every hour of every day…I think…we would all be very surprised how this would turn out. “I think you’ll be surprised to see how much time you have left.”

Smith thinks most of us will find that our extra time often goes to our smartphones.

“I’m telling you what I think is a waste of time, and that’s our smartphones. “I’m as guilty as everyone else,” he admitted. “For the first time in human history, we have encountered this particular problem – being distracted by a metal rectangle that we keep in our pocket, giving us constant notifications, giving us full access to the entire world.”

He explained that we let our lives go to waste every time we check our phones.

“Our lives literally fly by and most things are glued to a screen looking at meaningless things,” he said.

He said he personally keeps his phone on its charger in his locker throughout the day so he doesn’t have it with him all the time.

“I believe…if you eliminate half the time you spend on your smartphone, you can repurpose much of that wasted time.”

Smith then shared Romans 12:2. says“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.”

“We must be aware that when we become unconscious, we are outside God’s will,” he added, reflecting on how smartphones shut down our brains. “Smartphones constantly bombard us with these notifications, social media, entertainment, they distract our attention from God, and such meaningless distractions make it difficult for us to understand the will of God.”

Many are aware of the damage smartphones cause in their lives. In fact, some members of Generation Z are returning to “dumb phones.”

“I think you can see it in some Gen Z populations; they’re tired of screens,” said Jose Briones, a dumb phone influencer and moderator of the “r/dumbphones” subreddit. in question last year. “They don’t know what’s going on with mental health and they’re trying to cut back.”
