Network Rail engineers are working to determine the cause of the derailment

An investigation was launched after the high-speed train derailed in Kent.

According to Network Rail, the train was traveling at low speed on the sidings at the Ramsgate railway maintenance depot when it went off the tracks on Thursday night.

There were no passengers on the train and no injuries were reported, but a local resident said the train derailed inches from a family’s garden fence.

A Network Rail spokesman said an investigation was ongoing to find out the cause of the derailment.

“An incident occurred last night where an empty train on the sidelines of Ramsgate depot derailed at low speed,” the spokesman said.

“Services are operating normally, at reduced speed, in the area this morning.

“There has been some disruption to our services and if any customers are delayed they may request a late payment.”

Rail operator Southeastern said at 19:25 GMT on Thursday at X that trains were unable to run between Ramsgate and Minster due to a safety inspection of the tracks.

The train will remain aside on Thursday morning

Ten minutes later, they sent a message saying the inspection was complete and trains could run again.

The operator said at 20:03 an additional safety issue was detected and trains between Ramsgate and Minster were stopped.

Services slowly resumed at 20.16, causing delays until 00.57 on Friday.

It is not yet clear whether the safety inspections were linked to the derailment.

Southeastern has been contacted for comment.
