A drunk driver who caused a serious crash by going the wrong way on a two-lane road has been jailed.

Amelia King, 22, of Horley, Surrey, ignored ‘no trespassing’ signs on the A2011 Crawley Avenue exit slip road and traveled more than half a mile (1.25km) before her white Kia Rio collided with a black Nissan Leaf, Sussex Police in question.

Police added that the driver of the other vehicle told the court he was lucky to be alive, while the judge who sentenced King described him as “completely stupid and extremely dangerous”.

King was jailed for two years and eight months at Lewes Crown Court after admitting causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drink driving.

Officers said several other drivers passed King and narrowly avoided colliding with him before the crash, which occurred shortly before midnight on April 19.

King was hospitalized with a broken wrist.

A test revealed he had at least 92 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood in his system. The legal limit is 80 milligrams.

A 23-year-old Crawley woman who was a passenger in King’s car required surgery after breaking her jaw, ribs, arm and back in the crash, police said.

In a victim personal statement read out in court, she said: “No matter how hard I put on a brave face and smile, deep down this accident has absolutely devastated me.”
