Mother shot dead after her baby attacked police with giant knife: sad video

Chilling body camera footage shows a Missouri mother holding her baby attacking officers with a large kitchen knife before they shoot them both dead.

Newly released footage shows officers called to a domestic assault initially speaking calmly to 34-year-old mother Maria Pike, who was holding her 2-month-old daughter, Destini Hope, as she stood inside a closet at her Independence home.

Although body camera image shows The Independence Police Department (IDP) said after little exchange, officers repeatedly asked the upset mother to let go of her baby.

“Repeated attempts were unsuccessful and he exited the closet, walked past the officers, and sat on the bed next to the nightstand,” the department said.

Pike’s husband, Destinii’s father, is seen sitting topless on the bed as officers continue to talk to the mother, who is still holding her baby.

Eleven minutes into the footage, Pike is seen suddenly grabbing a large knife from the nightstand and lunging at a police officer.

“Wow!” The mother gasps at the male officer she initially threatened, before turning to the officer whose camera captured the horror, holding the knife above her head with her baby still in front of her.

“He retrieved a concealed large kitchen-style knife and lunged at officers while holding the child in his arms,” the police department wrote.

“As a result, a police officer shot at the woman and both she and her baby were fatally injured.”

Police have not identified the officer responsible for the fatal shooting, nor have they released any details about what happened after the video froze.

The three officers involved were later placed on administrative leave.

“The Independence Police Department has been and will continue to be transparent to the extent legally permissible,” the department said. “IPD fully understands the request regarding the events of that day and we will continue to cooperate fully with the external investigation being conducted by the Police Related Investigations Team.”

The ministry said it would not provide additional information about the incident until the investigation is concluded.
