FRSC moves to revoke licenses and prosecute offenders — News — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has announced that it will now withdraw licenses and prosecute any drivers or fleet operators involved in fatal Highway accidents.

FRSC Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed issued an alert themed “Driver Management: Improving Safety through Technology” during the annual Chief Safety Meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the annual meeting was designed to routinely sensitize Safety Managers on issues and developments in the implementation of the Road Transport Safety Standardization Scheme (RTSSS).

This is also to achieve best practices in Fleet Operations and Management, especially in this dynamic road transport sector of the Nigerian economy.

The FRSC boss said the event was a very important one aimed at addressing some critical observations made by the Corps so far regarding the management of fleet operations in the country and its implications.

Mohammed said the theme resonates deeply with the importance the Union places on the well-being of drivers being an integral safety standard among the three prescribed minimum safety standards of the RTSSS.

He said that the management of drivers, which is at the center of this discourse, is a task that every fleet operator should undertake seriously to increase safety on our roads.

“We are gathered here today to review performance and advocate for improvements to current fleet management practices.

According to him, we should not overlook that some of us are performing well in the implementation of the Minimum Safety Standards prescribed by the RTSSS.

“This must, as you can attest, be reflected in the patronage enjoyed by your businesses as well as the reduced or non-involvement of your respective fleets in road traffic accidents.

“So I appreciate all of you in this category and remind you that security is not just the shared responsibility of the government.

“Following a detailed review of previous fleet operators’ certification practices, an overall assessment of RTSSS implementation nationwide and other gaps observed, the following measures supported by law will come into force:

“All identified non-compliant fleet operators will be served with pre-action notices for prosecution, which must be pursued to its logical conclusion.

“Fleet Operators who deny certification teams access to their facilities will be prosecuted. Fleet Operators who fail to meet certification standards twice will be suspended from operations.

“Certificate Stickers will only be issued for vehicles fitted with functional Speed Limiting Devices (SLD). “Any driver or fleet operator involved in a fatal traffic accident will be subject to prosecution,” he said.

In his statement, the Inspector General of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Mr. Kayode Egbetokunn, said the management of the FRSC has introduced new strategies to ensure effective traffic management across the country.

Egbetokun was represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) in charge of Zone 7, Mr Benneth Igwe.

Similarly, the representative of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Mrs Olubunmi Otti, called on fleet operators to always protect the rights of passengers and ensure that they get value for their money.

NAN reports that over 2,000 safety managers from various fleet operators attended the meeting, which aimed to promote best practices in fleet management, especially in the dynamic road transport sector of the Nigerian economy.
