Haveri court sentenced man who attacked woman with acid to 10 years in prison

Haveri: Fast Track Special Court-1 in Haveri sentenced 25-year-old Prasad Chikkalli to 10 years imprisonment for carrying out the acid attack that left a woman seriously injured. Additionally, Judge Ninggouda Patil imposed a fine of 1.7 lakh rupees. Relatives of the survivors expressed their satisfaction with the decision and noted that justice was achieved within four years.
The judiciary directed the government to provide compensation of Rs 3 lakh under the acid attack survivor scheme applicable to cases with injury rate below 50%. The parent of the survivor said, “Justice has been served. Our daughter is having a hard time due to her injuries. The criminal should not be allowed to live a normal life in this society.”
According to the Haveri Women Police wing, Prasad was arrested in connection with the acid attack that took place on Ranebennur Road on January 28, 2020, when the victim was returning from work. Both people were students at Kerimattihalli Maternity Center, where the accused persistently pressured the victim to marry him. Upon her refusal, Chikkalli confessed to throwing acid on her face.
The survivor works as a manager in a Haveri-based garment factory. Based on his statements and those of the witnesses, the police filed a complaint under Sections 326A, 307 and 506 against Prasad. Policewoman CPI T Manjanna filed the charges. “The accused was unemployed and lied to the girl about his job. Even then, she rejected him and then the attack took place,” the officer said.
After extensive proceedings, the FTSC court delivered its decision. Vijay Kumar S Patil represented the prosecution in this matter.
