Wirral: Quadbike fishermen hit the beach to harvest 570 tonnes of mussels

Wirral Council’s Green Party’s Pat Cleary said he was opposed to such “industrial” activity on the beach.

“These are really important feeding areas for migratory birds.

“We’re talking about internationally threatened species like the oystercatcher and the snail.

“The Dee estuary is home to 5% of the global oystercatcher population. It is a threatened species and we know that shellfish fishing is directly contributing to their decline.

“So if we are serious about protecting nature, we cannot allow such activities on an industrial scale.”
