Wizards Should Prioritize Alex Sarr’s Offensive Development

The Washington Wizards have a lot of youngsters, and while they’ve chosen the right path in a rebuild, three rookies, a key second-year player, and veterans trying to remind the world of their existence means a lot of people to feed.

Alexandre Sarr, the second overall pick in this summer’s draft, relied on his teammates to prepare him, and they did so only with varying degrees of success and enthusiasm. This is not Sarr’s fault. Everyone, including him, is looking to prove themselves.

But the 6-foot-4 Frenchman oozes talent to the point where it makes one wonder how he hasn’t been more prominent in attack.

Yes, it is raw. His 38% field goal rate underlines this fact. But he is tall, athletic, actively runs the field and is a constant lob threat for a team in need of easy scores. Nearly a quarter of his offense comes from within 10 feet of the basket, and he converts on more than 69% of his shots. It’s pretty much the only place he’s productive on the field, but he’s often overlooked in stoppages and throwaway situations.

At this point, it’s safe to wonder if the coaching staff under Brian Keefe is deliberately letting kids get frustrated, letting them solve the problem on the fly, in order to find ways to adapt in the long run.

Frankly, this is the glass-half-full perspective. Because, with such a serious need for development, the alternative of having veterinarians run the business may be illogical.

Sarr in particular should hope to see more shots as the year progresses. He is scoring just under 11 goals per game on the season and the look he has created is not very effective yet, which requires him to prepare.

To make this happen, getting support from veterinarians is an absolute necessity.

Fortunately for Sarr at the other end of the pitch, the rookie is much more eye-catching. His size, long wingspan, athletic ability and timing are important assets for the Wizards. He is blocking and converting shots, and his defensive advantage is becoming more and more evident.

Perhaps this could be his path to a more significant offensive role. Earn stripes as a paint saver by building goodwill among the ranks to benefit from later.

Whatever the strategy, the Wizards have every reason to invest in the French player.
