19-year-old man admitted that he received a reduced sentence for double shooting in 2023

MCLEAN COUNTY (25News Now) – A Bloomington man has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge in connection with a March 2023 shooting in North Normal that sent two men to the hospital.

Colin Simpson, 19, pleaded guilty last week to attempted aggravated battery with a firearm and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

In response to that charge, the McLean County State’s Attorney’s Office dismissed eight other charges, including two counts of attempted murder, which would have resulted in decades in prison if Simpson had been convicted.

The shooting occurred in the early evening hours of March 6, 2023, in the 700 block of West Orlando in Northbrook Estates, Orlando. A man inside an apartment building had gunshot wounds in both legs. A second victim was found outside. Investigators said a bullet entered his back and ricocheted into his body and into his head. Both men survived their injuries.

Simpson was arrested after a year-long investigation by Normal Police.

At a detention hearing earlier this year, the judge noted that Simpson’s phone placed him at the scene of the shooting. A court document stated that Simpson was on juvenile probation for a residential burglary conspiracy.

Simpson’s 15-year sentence includes credit for the 210 days he has already served in the McLean County Jail.
