No charges have yet been filed against any of the teens involved in the mass attack on a 13-year-old girl in Kelowna last September.

Earlier this year, a disturbing video circulated on social media showing a young girl being thrown to the ground and beaten near Gyro Beach, and a large group of people watched and cheered. At one point, the girl is kicked in the face and she loses consciousness, while others throw soil on her.

The teenager’s family told Castanet: He suffered bruises on his ribs and a concussion. He was treated at Kelowna General Hospital after the attack.

A few days after the incident, Kelowna RCMP held a press conference to announce: 5 young people involved in the attack were arrested and was later released under strict conditions pending further investigation.

But two months after the attack occurred, Kelowna RCMP spokesman Ryan Watters said no charges have been filed at this time.

“Any charges will fall to the BC Prosecution Service,” Watters said. “Our investigators are still appealing to the BC Prosecution Service to review and decide on the charges.”

Local police have increased evening patrols in response to “violence involving youth this fall.”

“We heard the community’s concerns and concentrated our patrols in parks and public spaces downtown, focusing on City Park, Centennial Park, Gyro Beach and Ben Lee Park.” said Sergeant. Scott Powrie of the RCMP Community Safety Unit.

Sergeant. Powrie said officers had recently carried out more than 30 youth probation compliance checks involving young people involved in a number of different incidents.

“As a result, a dozen probation violation investigations were opened,” said Sgt. said Powrie. “RCMP Youth Support Officers are cooperating with Youth Justice Services to recommend charges on these matters to the BC Prosecution Service.”

Kelowna RCMP have not released any details regarding the incidents involving these youths.
