Anderson Co. School board vice president arrested on child sex crime charges

ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) – The vice president of the Anderson County Board of Education has been arrested on charges related to sexual offenses with a child.

According to search warrants, the incidents occurred in 1976 when Gary Lee Burgess had sexual intercourse with a minor between the ages of 11 and 14.

Burgess was arrested on Wednesday, Nov. 27, on two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

Burgess is running for South Carolina Superintendent of Education in 2022. He previously served as chief of Anderson County District 4.

It is unclear at this time whether Burgess is still a board member.
