Minibus driver guilty of causing death of father and son

During the five-day trial, the court heard Pounds had been drinking at a number of bars in Jersey on the day of the crash before returning to his van and driving away from the Pembroke pub car park.

Investigations suggested he was driving at 47mph (76kph), 17mph (27kph) over the speed limit, and made a phone call while behind the wheel minutes before the incident.

The Jersey State Police forensic crash investigator said there were no brake marks at the scene of the crash, and an eyewitness said he was surprised to see how much damage was done to the van involved in the crash.

The post-collision inspector who looked at the van said the extent of the damage was “pretty shocking” to him.

Amanda Fairnie and her husband Andrew found the bodies of the father and son and told the hearing tearfully that they had tried to get them medical attention but the couple had not moved when they found them.
