Woman hit by car while crossing the street in Laveen dies

LAVEEN VILLAGE, AZ (AZfamily) — A woman died after being hit by a car in Laveen Village on Sunday night.

Phoenix police identified the woman as 35-year-old Marche Zelita Mercado.

Police responded around 7 p.m. 51st Street north of Baseline Road and saw that Mercado was seriously injured. He died in hospital a short time later.

Investigators believe Mercado was struck by a northbound vehicle while crossing outside the crosswalk in the middle of 51st Street.

Police said the vehicle involved remained at the scene. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the driver was an off-duty employee who was in his personal vehicle.

The investigation into the fatal collision is ongoing.
