A wrong-way driver is accused of crashing head-on into a tractor trailer and leaving the scene Saturday morning in Hartford.

Troopers were called to Interstate 84 West near exit 48 in Hartford around 2 a.m. for a driver reported traveling the wrong way. While en route to the area, dispatchers notified responding troopers that the wrong-way vehicle had collided head-on with a tractor trailer and left the scene.

The wrong-way vehicle was in the left lane of the highway, near exit ramp 54. Investigators said the vehicle was still facing the wrong way and was rendered undrivable by the crash.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was identified by state police as a 65-year-old woman from East Hartford. State police said the woman showed signs of impairment and admitted to drinking multiple alcoholic beverages before driving away.

He was arrested and faces charges including reckless driving, evading responsibility, going the wrong way on a divided highway, reckless endangerment, and unlawful operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs.

The woman was later released on $5,000 bail and will appear in court in Manchester on November 8.
