Award-Winning Doctor Arrested in Illegal Gender Determination Scandal in Shamli | Meerut News

Award-winning UP document edited by the Hry team for 'gender determination tests'

Shamli: A 45-year-old doctor, who recently received the UP government’s ‘women empowerment award’, was caught red-handed while conducting illegal prenatal gender determination tests at a hospital in Shamli. The woman doctor was detained in a raid conducted by a team from Haryana’s health department on Thursday evening. The team had sent a pregnant woman as bait to a private hospital, where the doctor was caught “conducting tests with an unauthorized ultrasound machine and charging Rs 30,000.”
The raid was led by Dr Vishwajeet Rathi of PNDT (prenatal diagnostic techniques) nodal officer Rohtak with the help of Shamli police and health officials after receiving a tip-off that pregnant women were being taken from Haryana to UP town for such tests.
Rathi said on Friday: “The operation involved using a pregnant woman as bait to approach the suspected agent Meena. Meena demanded Rs 30,000 and transportation fee for the test. After meticulous planning, the trap set off from Gohana with Meena (Haryana) There was another pregnant woman who joined them on the way to Shamli, when they reached Maa Savitri Nursing Home in Shamli, the illegal tests were done by Dr Neelam Shukla. Neelam, Meena and another agent Ashok alias Sahadev were later arrested.”
A case was registered against them under sections 318 (4) (cheating and dishonesty) and 61 (2) (criminal conspiracy) of the BNS and under the provisions of the Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Abuse) Act. ACMO Shamli, Dr Atul Bansal.
Shukla, a social worker with an AYUSH degree, was awarded the Nari Shakti Award three days ago. Police said the woman was carrying out this work under the guise of a hospital and further investigations were ongoing.
Rohtak officials also praised the “flawless coordination with Shamli DM Arvind Kumar Chauhan, whose intervention enabled quick action by local law enforcement agencies”.
