The search for the driver continues after a Bakersfield man was killed in a two-vehicle rear-end crash.

CHP is searching for the driver of a black Chevy Silverado after rear-ending two vehicles on Highway 99 near Tulare Sunday night, leaving a 26-year-old Bakersfield man dead. CHP said the driver fled before officers arrived.

The California Highway Patrol said that on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at approximately 10:01 p.m., a driver was driving a black Chevrolet Silverado across the road in lane one on Highway 99 north of K Street.

The CHP said that for undetermined reasons, the Chevrolet Silverado rear-ended a red Nissan Altima. The crash caused the Nissan Altima to cross all northbound lanes and shoulders and crash into a fence.

Immediately after the first crash, the front end of a Chevrolet Silverado rear-ended a white Ford Escape.

Due to the impact of the collision, all vehicles involved in the accident suffered major damage.

The CHP said the driver of the Nissan, identified as a 26-year-old from Bakersfield, was pronounced dead at the scene.

While the driver of the Ford Escape was not injured, his two passengers were taken to the hospital.

After the two crashes, the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado got out of the vehicle and fled before police arrived.

A search was conducted with the assistance of multiple agencies, but the driver has not been located or identified at this time.

According to CHP, it is unknown whether alcohol and/or drugs were factors in this crash.
