A Florida sheriff says the creative thinking of a woman who called 911 with a clever text message saved her from her alleged attacker.

Luis Diego Hernandez-Moncayo, 27, of Mexico, applied for asylum the day before the alleged attack, Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a video shared on social media.

The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on October 19. The sheriff’s office confirmed to Fox News Digital that the suspect, 27-year-old Luis Diego Hernandez-Moncayo, came to the United States illegally from Mexico.

Chitwood said Hernandez-Moncayo applied for asylum the day before the alleged attack.

“He is currently sitting in jail with an immigration detention officer from the U.S. Border Patrol, charged with attempted sexual battery, battery by strangulation, and false imprisonment,” Chitwood wrote to X.

This is one of the latest criminal cases involving a suspect confirmed to be in the United States illegally. The issue of illegal immigration has become a fixture of the 2024 campaign process. Former President Donald Trump vowed to crack down on the issue, including a “ban” on so-called sanctuary cities, while Vice President Kamala Harris said the Biden-Harris administration’s policies were effective.
