Former S.C. State student charged with attempted murder in 2023 shooting

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – The South Carolina Department of Law Enforcement has charged a former South Carolina State student in connection with an incident. 2023 on-campus shooting.

On October 24, 21-year-old Melvin Anthony Williams was arrested, according to SLED.

On March 3, 2023, Williams opened fire on a crowd of students, wounding one person in the leg, authorities said.

Months after the shooting, SLED arrested 20-year-old Daniel Eugene Hutto. He was accused of being an accessory after the fact to attempted murder.

Investigators said Hutto opened his book bag, allowing the suspect to use the gun used to fire into the crowd of students.

Williams is charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, according to authorities.

The organization said that the case will be followed by the 1st Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

According to SLED, Williams was sent to the Orangeburg County Detention Center.
