US warns Iran at UN of ‘serious consequences’ of new attacks

The United States warned Iran at the United Nations Security Council on Monday that it would face “serious consequences” if it took any aggressive action against Israel or the United States. personnel in the Middle East.

US Ambassador said, “We will not hesitate to act in self-defense. Let there be no confusion. The US does not want to see tensions escalate further. We believe this should be the end of the direct exchange of fire between Israel and Iran.” UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the 15-member council.

The Security Council convened after Israel struck missile factories and other facilities in Iran before dawn on Saturday. This was retaliation for Iran’s attack on Israel on October 1, with nearly 200 ballistic missiles.

Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saied Iravani accused Washington of being “complicit” by providing military support to its ally.

“Iran has consistently advocated diplomacy,” he told the council. “However, as a sovereign state, the Islamic Republic of Iran reserves the right to respond to this act of aggression at a time of its own choosing.”

Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon called on the Security Council to impose “crippling sanctions” on Iran’s military and economic infrastructure and “take the necessary measures to prevent a deranged regime from acquiring nuclear capabilities.”

He described Israel’s strikes on Iran as “measured and proportionate” and said it would continue to defend itself.

“Any further attack will be met with swift and decisive consequences,” Danon told the council, adding that “Israel does not want war.”

China’s UN Ambassador Fu Cong called on the US – without naming names specifically – to “prioritize saving lives and preventing war” and support UN Security Council action for an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation in the Gaza Strip. Conflicts continue between Israel and Lebanon.

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia called out the United States for its support for Israel.

“Jerusalem is not ready to give up the choice to resolve all conflict situations with its neighbors through the use of force alone. They are determined to act this way… because they have the support and protection of their American allies,” he said.

Britain’s UN Ambassador, Barbara Woodward, stated that Iran should not respond to Israel’s weekend attack, adding: “All parties must act with restraint. There is no benefit in pouring more fuel into the flames of this cycle of escalating violence.”
