James “Dead” at the American Irish Historical Society

Dot Dot Productions, in conjunction with the American Irish Historical Society, presents Irish Repertory Theatre’s production of James Joyce’s “The Dead” this holiday season.

Adapted from James Joyce’s novella “The Dead, 1904”Adapted by Paul Muldoon and Jean Hanff Korelitz and directed by Ciarán O’Reilly, the film will be performed at the American Irish History Society on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. This Gilded Age mansion provides a gorgeous backdrop for this holiday favorite.

James Joyce’s novella “Dead”, It describes a holiday gathering, the Feast of the Epiphany, on January 6, 1904, at the Dublin home of two older sisters, Kate and Julia Morkan, and their niece, Mary Jane. At the party are students, friends, a famous tenor, a lost alcoholic, and the couple Gabriel and Gretta Conroy.

There are conversations, music, dancing and food throughout the evening. There are conversations and disagreements – polite or rude – and when it’s all over Gabriel learns something about his wife that changes his perception of who she is and who they are to each other, what it really means to be alive and what it really means to be dead. .
