Rival groups of junior doctors clash as tensions mount, rg kar protest, Kolkata doctor rape murder, doctors protest, junior doctors west bengal

Kolkata: Protests by doctors in West Bengal over the rape and murder of a junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata have been complicated by mutual accusations from rival associations.

The West Bengal Young Doctors Front (WBJDF), which is spearheading the protests, accused the newly formed West Bengal Young Doctors Association (WBJDA) of harboring members who promote a “culture of threat” in medical colleges and hospitals. WBJDF claims that WBJDA has links with influential figures in the medical community, including former RG Kar director Sandip Ghosh.

In response, representatives of the WBJDA, reportedly backed by the ruling Trinamool Congress, accused the WBJDF of using the tragic incident for its own interests, including raising money under the guise of protest. They called for an investigation into WBJDF’s activities, particularly its sources of funding.

WBJDF denied these allegations, arguing that WBJDA was supported by the ruling party to undermine protests that had garnered significant public support.

“We withdrew our death fast due to greater public interest and the request of the victim doctor’s parents. However, this does not mean that we will withdraw the agitation for our demands on this issue. Instead, we will expand the scope of our protest beyond metros, urban, suburban and district headquarters to rural West Bengal,” said a WBJDF representative.

In response to the ongoing situation, WBJDF announced plans for a protest march to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Salt Lake just before Kali Puja on Wednesday. They demand a speedy and thorough investigation into the rape and murder case.
