Eyewitnesses Describe ‘Deafening Explosion’ During Temple Fireworks Accident; More than 150 Injured, 8 Critical

More than 150 people were injured in a fire that broke out during a temple festival in Neeleswaram, Kasargod, with eyewitnesses describing hearing a deafening explosion and witnessing a huge fireball engulfing the area.

The incident occurred around midnight when a fire reportedly broke out at a fireworks storage facility near the temple premises, leading to a massive explosion.

According to Manorama, local youth Priyesh, who attended the festival, narrowly escaped the disaster. He and his cousins ​​were standing near the warehouse minutes before the explosion.

Among those present at the scene was Sreerag, a former patron of the temple’s Yuvajana committee, who had come from Bengaluru for the festival. He was busy managing the crowd and clearing Theyyam’s path when the accident occurred.

Currently, eight of the 150 injured are in critical condition.

Local officials said the injured were immediately rushed to hospitals in Kasargod, Kannur and Mangaluru for urgent medical attention. Kasargod Police confirmed the incident and stated that investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

Expressing surprise, Kasargod MP Rajmohan Unnithan said, “Shocking news came from Nileshwaram in Kasargod district last night. Around 154 people were injured and admitted to different hospitals. This Theyyam festival is a tradition of the people of North Malabar… police We were not alert about this festival… “

Theyyam festival, which is an integral part of the region’s cultural heritage, attracts large crowds every year. However, the incident raised concerns about the lack of security measures and oversight by authorities.
