Auburn South Elementary School crash: Driver released after ‘crash’ kills 11-year-old boy and injures four others

Victoria Police have released the driver after a car crashed through a school fence, tragically killing a student and seriously injuring four others.

The tragic incident occurred Tuesday afternoon at Auburn South Elementary School, when a 40-year-old driver was picking up his child from school.

The driver allegedly suffered a medical accident when he tried to make a U-turn, went off the road and crashed into a table in the schoolyard where young children were having recess.

The aftermath was described as frantic, with emergency services, local residents and people from school racing to help.

An 11-year-old boy was seriously injured in the accident and died while being taken to the hospital.

In the incident, two 11-year-old girls, a 10-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy were seriously injured and taken to the hospital.

Three of the children were taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital and two were taken to Monash Medical Centre.

Police remained on the scene until Wednesday morning, eventually removing a white Toyota RAV4 from school property around midnight.

The driver, from Hawthorn East, was arrested and interviewed by detectives.

However, no charges were laid and he was released overnight pending further investigation.

The woman and child in the vehicle escaped uninjured.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan told Sunrise it was a “very, very sad day”.

“At the outset, if I may just express my deepest condolences to the family and school community who are grieving the loss of a beautiful little boy today,” he said in a statement Wednesday morning. .

“This is certainly something that is being felt by parents, families across the state and communities across Victoria.

“There will be additional teachers, staff and counselors at the school today, as well as at the neighboring high school across the road.

“It’s a really close-knit community. There are many families in this community who will be grieving and are providing support to the school community today.

Ms Allan did not want to get caught up in speculation, saying it was “too soon” and Victoria Police needed time to do its job.

Inspector Craig McEvoy from Victoria Police said the incident appeared to be a “tragic accident”.

“It’s really hard for everyone involved, from the community, to the school community, to the local community, to the first responders, to the ambulances, to the police,” he said.

“These incidents involving death and serious injury are always difficult, but they are especially difficult when children are involved.”

The car had a green P plate but Inspector McEvoy said he was unsure of the woman’s driving licence.

After the devastating events, the people of the region were left in mourning.

A mother from the school said: messenger of the sun The incident was “traumatic”.

“I became aware of the incident on our parents’ WhatsApp group just before 3pm… I felt sick when I read the message,” he said.

“As I approached the school, I could see the emergency services in the distance.

“There was a lot of speculation about what happened.

“When I saw my daughter, I gave her a big hug, everyone was surprised.

“It’s a great school with great teachers and students, and we just pray for the injured kids to recover.”
