Desserts and snacks may be a part of the Diwali plate, but this festive season, experts recommend careful eating, especially for those with prediabetes and diabetes.

For diabetics, enjoying these seasonal treats without spiking blood sugar levels can be a challenging balance. Dr., an endocrinologist at Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune. Piyush Lodha suggested some practical strategies to help diabetics cope with these urges without compromising their health.

One of the biggest challenges faced by diabetics is the abundance of sugary treats during Diwali, which can lead to spikes in blood sugar. “It is very important to choose desserts with a low glycemic index (GI),” Dr Lodha explained. “Low GI foods release glucose slowly, preventing sharp increases in blood sugar levels.”

Understanding which treats fall into this category can allow diabetics to make safer choices.

Dr Lodha suggested portion control as a way to cope with these social situations: “Taking small bites or sharing portions can help diabetics feel included in the celebration without overdoing it.”

This not only satisfies desires in moderation, but also reduces the guilt of overindulgence.

In addition to portion control, planning balanced meals is also very important.

Diabetics can better manage blood sugar by pairing meals with protein, healthy fats and fiber.

Dr Lodha advised meal prepping: “If you know you’re going to have dessert, plan the rest of your meal to include high-fiber vegetables and protein-rich foods. This helps keep blood sugar stable throughout the day.”

Diabetics should also consider healthier alternatives to traditional desserts. There are now sugar-free or low-sugar options on the market, often made with natural sweeteners.

“Options like stevia or erythritol are safer choices, while nut-based treats offer protein and healthy fats without excess sugar,” Dr Lodha said.

Another important component of blood sugar management during festivals is physical activity.

“Staying active can compensate for the extra calories from sweets,” Dr Lodha explained, adding: “Simple activities such as family walks or group games help maintain blood sugar balance and allow the festival to be enjoyed mindfully.”

The expert encouraged individuals to consult their healthcare professionals for personalized advice and emphasized that moderation and planning are key to enjoying the festivities safely.
