Kalafong Hospital grapples with water shortage

Metro implemented Level 1 water restrictions to manage consumption.

Provincial water authority Rand Water is struggling with consumption levels, forcing councils to introduce billing regulations to penalize user behaviour.

Ministry spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said Kalafong Hospital has been experiencing an unstable water supply since last week.

However, the plant’s borehole can only provide water to low-lying areas.

Modiba said the city provides water tankers to the hospital every day.

“However, these, along with the borehole, are still insufficient to provide optimal patient care in the hospital. Due to water shortages, outpatient appointments are being rescheduled and elective procedures are being limited until further notice.”

“Emergency and obstetric cases will be referred to nearby facilities, and the public is advised to seek non-urgent care at alternative healthcare facilities.”
