Parents detained, stories inconsistent about 3-year-old’s shooting

DETROIT — The investigation is ongoing and a 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot in the stomach at his home on West Grand Street Wednesday. According to WDIV-Detroit. Police said a 15-year-old was responsible for the toddler, along with a 2-year-old and a 2-month-old, at the time of the attack, but it is unclear where the parents were at the time.

The child’s mother allegedly told police she was at the laundromat when she heard an explosion while unloading her car and went inside to check on her children. Police said neighbors didn’t hear any gunshots and shooting monitors in the area didn’t hear any gunshots either. The father’s whereabouts at the time of the attack are unknown.

DPD Deputy Chief Charles Fitzgerald said the stories provided by parents were inconsistent and contradictory. Police did not elaborate on what else was said by the parents, but both parents were taken into custody and Child Protective Services was contacted.
