A student was seriously injured when a tree fell on children outside the primary school

PLEASANT HILL, Mo. (KCTV/Gray News) – A child was taken to the hospital after a tree fell at an elementary school and hit multiple students.

According to police, emergency personnel responded to Pleasant Hill Elementary School around 1:40 p.m. after learning that a rotten tree had fallen in a neighbor’s yard next to the playground.

Pleasant Hill police said the tree, believed to have fallen due to high winds, likely hit a student directly in the head. The seriously injured child was taken to hospital.

According to school nurse staff, four other students were struck by a branch of the fallen tree and suffered minor injuries.

Police Chief Tommy Wright said law enforcement has identified the owner of the property where the tree was found.

“People need to be careful about the trees in their yards,” Wright said. “We want to make sure we use this as an opportunity to educate people about the dangers of trees.”

“Winds are always strong this time of year and in the spring. We have some incoming weather systems. “We want to let people know it’s time to take a look at what’s in your yard,” he said.
