Man sentenced to life in prison for killing girlfriend in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – A Sioux City man was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of murdering his girlfriend in 2023.

Austyn Self, 24, was sentenced to life in prison on Friday, October 18, according to court documents. Self pleaded guilty Friday, Aug. 9, to three counts of child endangerment and one count of first-degree murder.

Self was also ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution, along with court costs and court-ordered attorney fees, the documents say.

Self’s sentencing came from a fatal shooting on Nebraska Avenue. Saturday, January 14, around 21.30 pm. when the Sioux City Police Department was called to a domestic disturbance.

Sioux City officers arrived on scene to find 31-year-old Sarah Zoelle suffering from a gunshot wound. Zoelle was transported to a nearby hospital and later died. Police said three children were in the home at the time of the incident.

Self was taken into custody by the Iowa Department of Corrections following his sentencing, according to court documents.
