Subway delays in New York? Leaves falling on train tracks may be the cause

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Subway delays occur in New York City for many reasons, including mechanical issues or NYPD activity.

But have you heard that falling leaves are the cause of train disruptions?

Anywhere leaves fall can cause problems for train tracks being built in that area. MTA. Falling leaves can cause delays on the B, N, Q and S lines in Brooklyn, the 5 Line in the Bronx, the A line in Queens, the Staten Island Railroad, the LIRR and Metro-North.

When fallen leaves are crushed, they leave behind a slippery residue known as pectin, the MTA’s website said. This can cause the wheels to slip and slide when the train accelerates or stops.

According to the MTA, slippage can cause flat spots on train wheels, which can lead to the entire train car being put out of service.

To help prevent delays, the MTA said it uses lasers and water jets to clear fallen leaves from the tracks each night in the fall. The agency will also clean trains during peak autumn days.
