Standard 100: People shaping London in Politics, Security, Knife Crime, Transport and Philanthropy

This week The London Standard unveils The Standard 100 list of the top hundred men and women shaping the capital in 2024.

Today the Standard can reveal mentions in the Politics, Security, Knife Crime, Transport and Charity categories.

The list includes a mix of influential politicians, Britain’s most senior police officer, the official tasked with keeping London’s commute running smoothly and the inspirational people behind some of London’s most prominent charities.

Among these names is Rachel Reeves, who has just started making history as the first female Chancellor of the Ministry of Exchequer to announce a budget.

There’s also Sadiq Khan, who said “it’s the honor of my life to serve the city I love” when he won a landmark third term as Mayor of London in May. His key priorities for his third and final term include pedestrianizing Oxford Street and reducing knife crime.

The list also includes many vital people who will help Khan tackle the scourge of knife crime.

While Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has vowed to step up efforts to “break the culture of people carrying knives”, mother-daughter duo Monique and Eliza Rebeiro are working to steer young people away from crime through their charity Lives Not Knives.

Trauma surgeon Martin Griffiths set up the first hospital ward-based violence reduction service at the Royal London Hospital after coming face to face with the shocking reality of knife crime.

The transport section includes brothers James and Lyle Metcalfe from Volt, who helped put e-bikes on the map, and TfL’s Andy Lord, who is responsible for the “world’s largest public transport authority”.

Also on the list are charity leaders who inspire Londoners to dig deep and help people in need at home and abroad.

They include Four Weddings and a Funeral screenwriter Richard Curtis, who co-founded Comic Relief, which has raised more than £1bn for good causes.

There’s also Joyclen Buffong, founder of Rise 365, who has devoted her life to helping young people in Hackney, and Justin Byam Shaw and Charlotte Hill of food redistribution charity Felix Project, which distributed the equivalent of 32 million meals last year. People in every borough of London.

Despite higher taxes on capital gains and employers’ National Insurance, the enduring message in Rachel Reeves’s Budget was one of hope for steady growth (and a slow decline in inflation) for the economy.

The capital may have to tighten its belt in the coming years, especially for those who like to have a glass of wine after work.

Love it or hate it, Volt electric bikes have transformed commuting for many Londoners.

They go faster than taxis and make cycling cooler. (But kudos to Brent Council for getting tough on abandoned bikes and reducing pavement chaos.)
