Man attacked with hammer during theft

A man was taken to hospital after being attacked with a hammer at his own home in Newry, police said.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. Wednesday when he responded to a burglary in the city’s Violet Hill Boulevard area.

He said he was attacked by two men wielding a hammer, one of whom had a machete-style knife.

The victim’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, and a 40-year-old man was also arrested.

The man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit a criminal offence.

He currently remains in police custody.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) are continuing investigations and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
