She added: “There are mornings where I wake up and forget… and then suddenly I remember. I’m still trying to process it.” Ali encountered a lump while breastfeeding her and husband David O’Mahony’s youngest daughter, Isabella.

Ali, who is also the proud mother of four-year-old daughter Isla, shared: “I wasn’t breastfeeding Izzy at night but then David went back to London for work and suddenly he was feeding like crazy. I was thinking, ‘Maybe he’s going through a growth spurt or something.’

“And so my breasts were sore. I woke up the next morning and thought, ‘Oh, this really hurts.’ That’s when I felt a lump.”

Ali She assumed her duct was blocked and was given some antibiotics, but the problem wasn’t improving, so she went to a breast clinic on her doctor’s advice. He added: “It was a bank holiday in Ireland so I went straight to the emergency doctor.

“I really looked like I had mastitis, especially as I had weaned Izzy at night before. We thought I probably had a blocked duct. The doctor gave me antibiotics and said if it didn’t get better in a few days I should go to a breast clinic.

“But it wasn’t getting better, and the more I felt it, the more I realized it wasn’t just a blocked drain. I went to my doctor and said, ‘Can I actually go to the clinic now?’ I said. and he was very supportive of it.”

Ali received the news by phone but was reassured that they said they “intend to treat” him. Explaining that the clinic had gone too far in making a diagnosis, he said: “We agreed that I would text him and he would call me back later. I could hear it in his tone but he explained it to me in the kindest way possible. He was very reassuring. He said the words I held onto ‘were meant to cure me’ .”

Doctors believe her cancer is “hormone-induced” and are doing further research to determine whether it is genetic, but her aunt and grandmother also had breast cancer.

She was preparing to have a single mastectomy and was still waiting to hear if having a double mastectomy was a good idea as a “preventive measure.”

The former ‘Doctors’ actor is also seen by a psychologist who specializes in oncology and is given a mentor who is a cancer patient.

Ali has vowed to beat the disease and intends to return to acting. He added: “I will get through this and come out the other side.

“After I got diagnosed I went on Instagram and saw a post from my former co-star in The Bill, Dominic Power, and I could see he was on set in Hollyoaks. I suddenly felt this pain, like, ‘I want to look into an actor’s eyes and do a scene.’ “I really miss it.”
