Raw honey may be one of the reasons why Ikarian residents live to be 100 years old, a gastronomy expert has said.

The Greek island, known as one of the blue regions of the world and where people live for particularly long periods, is trying to figure out why people in these places live so long.

One of these experts, Diane Kochilas, who lives on the island, says raw honey can contribute to longer lives of Ikarian residents.

Honey, whether raw or not, has long been known to have a number of health benefits that, along with other factors, can contribute to extending one’s lifespan.

One resident of Ikaria said the island recipe of garlic, ginger, sage and honey was “the penicillin of its generation”, while another called it “natural Viagra”.

Although the effects of honey on sexual health have not been studied, other studies have investigated other areas where honey may be helpful.

A BMJ article published in 2021 concluded: “Honey was superior to usual care in improving symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections. It provides a widely available and inexpensive alternative to antibiotics.”

“Honey may aid efforts to slow the spread of antimicrobial resistance, but higher quality, placebo-controlled studies are needed.”

Meanwhile, another study published in 2020 evaluating honey’s ability to help fight colds and flu concluded: “We found that honey was actually better than regular care in terms of combined symptoms, cough frequency, and cough severity…We also made a specific recommendation “We cannot find the ‘dosage’ or ‘way’ of taking honey as we include many different formulations,” he said.

CBD.co experts suggest that in addition to honey’s potential to help with coughs and colds, it may also help with snoring.

A spokesperson told GloucestershireLive: “Honey has impressive anti-inflammatory properties that can work wonders in reducing snoring.

“When your throat is less irritated and inflamed, your airways are more open, making you less likely to snore. Try mixing a teaspoon of honey into a glass of hot water, chamomile tea, or ginger tea.

“You can enjoy this cozy cup sometime between dinner and bedtime. It really works as part of a relaxing pre-bedtime routine to help you wind down and relax.
