British businessman charged with murder in Hong Kong

A British businessman accused of murder over the death of an Indonesian woman at a waterfall in the park has been ordered to remain in custody in Hong Kong.

Jamie Tzewee Chapman, 34, did not enter a plea at his hearing on Friday and his lawyer did not seek bail.

The judge adjourned the case until January to allow time for further investigation.

Chapman and his Hong Kong wife were arrested on Tuesday when they returned to the city from mainland China.

His wife was being held on suspicion of assisting an offender before being released on bail pending further investigation, police said on Thursday.

Police said Chapman and the Indonesian woman went together to a waterfall in a park on Hong Kong Island on Sunday night.

He left after about half an hour. Police said residents spotted the woman’s body in the pond below the falls Monday morning.

He had received a blow to the head and drowned.

Mevi Novitasari, approximately 25, was a domestic worker in Hong Kong but did not work for the suspect, police said.

Judha Nugraha, director of protection for Indonesian citizens and legal entities, said he was from Cilacap in Central Java province.

He said the employment agency and the Indonesian consulate would organize the repatriation of his body and that the consulate general would continue to monitor the investigation.
