A Day of the Dead Celebration is held in Wausau on Friday night

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – A lively celebration honoring our deceased loved ones is taking place in Wausau Friday night.

A Day of the Dead Celebration is being held at Monk Botanical Gardens. During the celebration, those who passed away in Mexico and many countries of Central America are commemorated. There is a rule to celebrate. No crying. Activities such as face painting, dance performances, food and beverage vendors and much more will be held for people of all ages to create a happy atmosphere.

“It will be a lot of fun. We are very excited to do activities for children. Kids will be able to do crafts like painting skulls. They will also have other activities like playing puzzles and Loteria. Loteria is like Mexican bingo. This is for children and families,” said HOLA President Mariana Savela.

Volunteers are working hard for Friday’s event. They have been setting up tables, decorations and gravestones in the gardens since Thursday. They will work hard on Friday too. Ashley Baltazar is participating in her 2nd year as a volunteer. His daughter is also one of the dancers performing. He says volunteering for such a good cause means everything to him.

“You know, giving your heart, giving your time to something that you know will make a difference for society, for children, something that you know they will enjoy. You know, people like to be together and enjoy themselves together,” Baltazar said.

Support for the celebration was provided through a community arts grant.

If you want to go out, it starts at 17.30. $5 per person. If you come with a Day of the Dead costume, you only pay $1. Reminder, this costume cannot be just a Halloween costume.

Monk Botanical Gardens is located at 1800 N 1st Ave, Wausau.
