CPS special crime unit hands MP Mike Amesbury’s file to Cheshire Police | Politics News

The Crown Prosecution Service’s special crime section is considering whether to charge MP Mike Amesbury after CCTV showed the politician punching a man in the street.

While the police are responsible for collecting evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is responsible for whether someone is charged with a crime.

Cheshire Police handed the file over to the CPS.

Mr Amesbury, MP for Runcorn and Helsby, voluntarily spoke to police following the incident in Frodsham but was not arrested.

Due to his position as a member of Parliament, the case was referred to the special crime section of the CPS in London rather than the local department in North West England.

CCTV footage shows Mr Amesbury confronting another man for about 30 seconds before the MP struck the other man in the face.

It’s unclear what the two were talking about; but Mr Amesbury claimed he was “threatened in the street after an evening out with friends”.

Cheshire Police said a 55-year-old man voluntarily interviewed under caution and was “released pending further investigation”.

The MP said in a statement that he “personally contacted Cheshire Police to report what happened during this incident.”

The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday on Frodsham High Street, near Cheshire.

In July last year a 56-year-old man was convicted of stalking Mr Amesbury at his constituency office.

Prosecutors said he was seen looking through the window and asked the guards about their security level.

The CPS confirmed it had received a file from Cheshire Police.

Cheshire Police and Labor have been approached for comment.
