Two arrested for Halloween night shooting at Food Basics checkout in Sudbury

Police track down suspects and charge them with attempted murder after ‘targeted’ shooting at Flour Mill grocery store that left serious injuries

Notre Dame Boulevard Food Essentials On Halloween night, two people were arrested for attempted murder after what police say was a “targeted” shooting.

Greater Sudbury Police said shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31, officers were dispatched to a convenience store on Notre Dame Boulevard in reference to a weapons complaint.

Police were told two men approached a man at the self-checkout and one of them shot the man.

The suspects and the man who was shot escaped from the market.

The 31-year-old man who was struck by a bullet was later taken to the hospital and treated for serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

Police teams arrived at the scene and located a person suspected of being involved in the incident. The person was detained and a criminal complaint was filed, but it was determined that the person was not the shooter.

According to the information obtained as a result of the investigation, police teams visited a residence on Baker Street. When they arrived at the residence, officers saw a person matching the description of the shooter outside.

The suspect fled on foot and was located by K9 Roy and his handler. Police also seized the gun thought to have been used in the incident.

A 17-year-old boy was charged with the following crimes:

  • Attempted murder
  • possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possession of a firearm without permission
  • pointing a firearm
  • Intentional discharge of a firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Information about unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Violation of release order
  • Possession of prohibited firearms

The 17-year-old was held in police custody overnight and will appear in bail court today, November 1, to answer to the charges. His name cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The second suspect, a 22-year-old man, was charged with the following crimes:

  • Attempted murder
  • Information about unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • block the police

The 22-year-old suspect was detained overnight and will appear in bail court on November 1 to answer to the charges. Since the information has not yet been sworn in court, his name cannot be disclosed at this time.

Greater Sudbury Police say this was a targeted incident as the people involved are believed to know each other.

Police said they wanted to thank and praise their officers and members of the 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center for their quick and coordinated response to a high-risk situation in which two dangerous and violent criminals were arrested and charged.
