Soldier rescues man trapped under 700 pounds of drywall in Sault Ste Marie

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. (WLUC) – A rescue effort was made Thursday after a man found himself trapped under large sheets of drywall weighing 700 pounds.

A 43-year-old man from Levering was working alone at the under-construction Michigan State Police Sault Ste Marie station, according to MSP’s press release. When the man tried to carry large sheets of drywall, he fell unexpectedly, trapping himself underneath. He managed to call for help, and Officer Ferraro, who was at the station at the time, faintly heard the man’s cries for help and immediately ran outside.

Trooper Ferraro lifted heavy sheets of drywall enough for the trapped man to get out. In response to Ferraro’s response, MSP said the man suffered no serious injuries and expressed sincere gratitude for the deputy’s efforts.

“This incident could have had much more serious consequences,” Trooper Ferraro said. “I’m happy to be around to help.”

MSP says it’s important to prioritize safety when working alone, whether at home or at work. Before starting any project, plan your tasks carefully and identify potential hazards to ensure you are prepared for any challenge. Additionally, it may be a good idea to let a friend or family member know about your business plans, including the expected time and location. This way someone will be aware of your activities and can check in on you when necessary.
