Monroe County suspends evening tornado siren tests

At noon on Friday, November 1, Monroe County performed a test of it outdoor warning sirens.

This is a regular event held on the first Friday of every month. A second test is usually done at 7 p.m.

The Monroe County Emergency Management Agency recently announced it would halt the 7 p.m. testing until equipment upgrades were completed.

The upgrades are part of an ongoing project that started last year to replace old sirens, EMA Deputy Director Justin Baker said via email.

“Changes are being made because the majority of sirens are old and outdated,” Baker said. “This makes the siren more difficult to fix when mechanical problems occur.”

Baker said the EMA was aware of reports of sirens going off when they shouldn’t, but said the suspension of the 7pm test was unrelated to the upgrade project.

Once the upgrades are completed, testing at 7 p.m. will resume, but Baker said there is no timeline for when that will happen.
