On September 21, 2023 While Schwebach was walking in Sioux City, Corona walked up to the white SUV Ruiz was driving and chatted with him. At one point, Corona Ruiz jumped out the driver’s side window, struck Schwebach and then drove away, authorities said. Schwebach was eventually taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Corona Ruiz was arrested the next day in South Sioux City, Nebraska, and charged with murder. Under Iowa law, if you are convicted of first-degree murder, your sentence is life in prison without parole.
