The man ran to Goudy Elementary School for help after injuring himself and a 9-year-old girl on Winthrop Avenue in Uptown, Chicago.

CHICAGO (Wales) — Evidence signs littered the sidewalks as schoolchildren on the North Side heard gunfire Friday afternoon.

“It’s very surprising because I never thought I’d see this many police here at this time,” Uptown resident Lisette Gonzalez said.

The shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m., during a school holiday, at Goudy Elementary School near Winona Street and Winthrop Avenue, steps from the Argyle CTA Red Line stop.

“This can’t happen again,” said 48th District Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth. “Any instances of gun violence are unacceptable, especially when around children.”

Police said a 9-year-old girl was struck by a bullet in her calf as she stood on the sidewalk.

A 45-year-old man was shot in the arm and authorities said he ran to the school for help.

The principal said teachers helped put pressure on his wound until help arrived.

It is not yet known whether the injured 9-year-old child was a student at the school or a child passing by.

Both shooting victims are expected to be okay, police said.

But many in the neighborhood are concerned about an increase in violence in the police district, which includes Uptown.

In the first 10 months of this year, there was a 60 percent increase in shootings compared to the same period last year.

The mayor wanted more police.

“We would love to see more patrols in this area, especially foot patrols, bicycle patrols,” Manaa-Hoppenworth said. he said.

No one is in custody. Police did not say who the attacker or attackers targeted or why, and it was unclear whether the two victims were together or in different parts of the block.
