Manor, Texas students mourn Darrin Loving killed at school

Darrin Ray Loving had enthusiasm for her. He was funny, goofy, kind, and not afraid to give harsh advice; They were the kind of friends that students who continue their lives in high school needed and wanted in their own corner.

Choking back tears during her speech at the memorial service, Principal Jessika Hearne said Loving would be “sorely missed”.

After the prayer, Superintendent Robert Sormani led the crowd, many carrying electric candles, to the entrance of the stadium, where the lights were placed along with flowers and other memorabilia.

Some of Loving’s friends who attended the vigil said Loving can’t wait to graduate this school year and make his mother proud.

J’Niya Cyphers, a third-grader who knew Loving well, said that now, when classes resume every day, they will have to walk past the spot where their friends, classmates and teachers were killed at school.

“It’s going to be tough,” Cyphers said. “I can tell you now, I won’t want to go.”

Tiffany Hernandez, an English as a second language teacher, has a freshman son on the football team who knows Loving. He said his son described him as “very friendly and smiling.”

“He was just a good-hearted young man,” Hernandez said.

Susie Jones, whose daughter attends Manor High School, said Loving’s death was shocking even to those who did not know him.

“As a parent, I could never imagine dropping my child off at school and never seeing them again,” Jones said.

During the vigil, Hearne said the school and district aim to create a safe environment for every student.

“When your kids don’t feel safe, they can’t learn,” Hearne said.

Argument led to Loving’s death

Another 18-year-old Manor High School student, Mac Brown Mbah Mbanwei, He is accused of fatally stabbing Loving in a men’s restroom near a cafeteria on Tuesday and was charged with murder.

According to the arrest affidavit, students alerted the school resource officer to the stabbing. The officer struggled with Mbanwei, who refused to take his hands out of his pockets when ordered. Mbanwei was holding a kitchen knife, according to testimony.

When the officer returned to the lunch area, he saw a student, later identified as Loving, bleeding from multiple stab wounds, according to the affidavit.

The officer administered first aid to Loving until paramedics arrived, according to the affidavit, which said the fight started in the restroom and moved to the nearby cafeteria.

Police said Loving died at the school at 1:12 p.m. Authorities did not say what led to the stabbing, but said Loving and Mbanwei knew each other and had been involved in a fight the previous week.

Mbanwei is being held in the Travis County Jail on $1 million bail, records show. A judge ordered Mbanwei to be evaluated for mental health, according to the bail decision.

Classes at Manor High School were canceled Monday.
