Jerusalem:

Police said 19 people were injured in a missile attack on Israel’s Sharon district early Saturday, after the military reported three shells had been fired from Lebanon into central Israel.

Israeli police added that 19 people, four of whom were in “moderate condition”, were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Israel’s Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency medical service said earlier that several people were injured in the attack on the city of Tira, including “a male in his 20s with shrapnel injuries.”

Videos published by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs on social media show fire and smoke spreading from a building to the street and emergency response teams rushing to the area.

“This is the result of a Hezbollah rocket hitting a building in the Israeli Arab town of Tira, injuring 19 civilians,” the ministry said in the post.

The statement said, “We cannot and will not rest until Hezbollah disintegrates.”

The Israeli military said on Telegram that it had intercepted some of the three missiles fired from Lebanon.

Tira, a predominantly Arab town, is located about 25 kilometers (15 miles) northeast of Tel Aviv, close to the border with the occupied West Bank.

The war, which intensified in the Gaza Strip, also spread to Lebanon, where Israel launched air strikes against Hezbollah, an ally of the Palestinian group Hamas.

According to Israeli figures, at least 63 people have been killed on the Israeli side since the start of cross-border contacts with Hezbollah following Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Rocket fire from Lebanon on Thursday killed seven people, including four Thai farmers, in Metula, northern Israel.

The Hamas attack on Israel in October resulted in 1,206 deaths, mostly civilians, according to AFP’s calculation based on official Israeli figures.

The Israeli response killed 43,259 Palestinians in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry that are considered reliable by the United Nations.
